Owyhee County is the second largest county in Idaho by average, and has 9 different communities and 2 recreational areas. It’s located in the southwest corner of Idaho, along the Nevada and Oregon borders. It is filled with incredible beauty to hike, play and live in.
Homedale is one of the beloved communities in Owyhee County. It is home to more than 2,600 residents. The name of the city was chosen by drawing names from a hat, in a way that perhaps can forever define how laid back and fun this community is. It is located along the beautiful Snake River, with rolling hills of country farmland and perfectly tailored vineyards. It’s a country dream of simplicity and serenity.
Marsing is another well known community from Owyhee County. It is located only twelve miles west of Nampa. There are just a little over 2,100 residents that call this quaint place home. It is known has the “Gateway To the Owyhee’s” because of its immense outdoor recreational area near the Owyhee Mountain range.
One of the smallest county seats in the nation can be found in Owyhee County, in the unincorporated community of Murphy, Idaho. It has a small population of around 100 people whose main way of life is farming. It has a small airstrip that is not operated by a control tower, for small non-commercial airplanes. The Owyhee County Historical Museum and Library are located in Murphy.
Besides peaceful country living, Owyhee County has other great qualities as well. Wonderful recreational fun can be discovered at Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park. This park has multiple dunes for hiking and exploring. The highest is 474 feet high. A campground offers year round camping opportunities, with a seasonal observatory to gaze upon the stars. There is a nine mile riding trail around the park for four wheelers or horses alike. Another fun place to visit in Owyhee County is Silver City. This historic city is one of the few mining cities in the western states that was not burnt down, or rebuilt into a modern city. Over 75 of the original structures can be seen here. You can even stay in a hotel that is exactly as it was 100 years ago, with a few updated amenities. If walls could speak, this is one city that would have quite an adventure to tell. Perhaps one of the most treasured would be how over $60 million worth of precious metals were taken from this area in 70 years.
Whether it’s beautiful country living or just recreational fun you’re seeking, Owyhee County has something to offer. Come see for yourself!
